Data Centre Facility Overview

Location
DataHive data centre is an ideal location for your primary and secondary data due to the low probability of natural disasters, and the close proximity to peering points world-wide. Geographically supported by the Calgary metro power grid with back up of three substations contributes to DataHive’s 100% uptime guarantee. Additionally, multiple carrier fiber runs guarantee the DataHive Calgary data centres as the perfect location for your mission-critical data.

Physical Security
The data centre is physically isolated in a secure, safe environment. Only a handful of highly trained technicians are allowed access and customer access to the data centre floor is restricted to those holding access cards verified by biometric scanners.

The data centre is under 24 x 7 x 365 video surveillance internally and externally, and building management manages the security of the facility.

Uninterrupted Power
Power systems in DataHive’s data centres are designed to run uninterrupted even in the unlikely event of a total power outage. All servers are fed with UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) power, backing up public utility power. The UPS is N+1 redundant with instantaneous failover.

Power Utilization
DataHive’s power supply is well in excess of its actual requirement. The power consumption of every circuit is regularly measured ensuring each client does not exceed more than 80% utilization, allowing for a 20% safety margin. DataHive exceeds redundancy and can provide separate power systems (A and B) each with its own UPS, with each UPS having the capacity to supply power to the entire data centre.

Generator
The dedicated diesel generator can run indefinitely. The generator is regularly tested, maintained and activated to ensure continued function in any event. During power restoration, the generator continues to operate ensuring that the main power has been stabilized.

Bypass
DataHive further safeguards power requirements with the support of a Powerware Bypass enabling power transfer for continual uptime during planned maintenance or equipment upgrades.

Precision Environment
DataHive’s data centres are meticulously tidy. All air is circulated and filtered to remove dust and contamination. Liebert environmental control systems ensure the data centre is kept at a constant temperature. The data centre’s Liebert CRAC (Computer Room Air Condition) system is N+1 redundant and regulates both room temperature and humidity to ensure a cool, static-free environment. A temperature of 20 degrees Celsius with controlled humidity is maintained.

Fire Detection & Suppression
If, in the unlikely event of a data centre disruption, administrators regulate critical early detection and increasing levels of overview to both prevent and control possible disruption. An advanced fire suppression system, walls, ceiling, floors, wiring, detection system, equipment monitoring, maintenance and cleanliness are all factors addressed to insure against the possibility of disruption.

Network
The DataHive IP network features a dedicated, triple redundant backbone network that connects the data centre using multiple fibre connections. The DataHive network virtually eliminates the traditional single point of failure. Within the data center, the network architecture scaled to meet, and usually exceed client demand for bandwidth. In fact, the architecture employs powerful routers running at required speeds.

Connectivity
DataHive clients have access to connections to multiple backbones to ensure data reaches the end user in the fastest, most efficient manner possible. The connecting trunks are a combination of Fiber Optic, Copper and antennas of sight connection. These services are a mixture of Layer 1 to Layer 3.

BGP Network Diversity Routing
Border Gateway Protocol is the inter-domain routing protocol designed for the global Internet. DataHive runs the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for best case routing. The BGP protocol is a standard that allows for the routing of packets of information sent out from the DataHive network. Each packet of information is evaluated and sent over the best route possible.

Because of our redundant network architecture, packets may be sent via alternative routes even if they are being delivered to the same end user. Should one route fail, packets are automatically redirected through another route via a different provider.

Bandwidth Utilization
The DataHive network has plenty of excess capacity, even during peak times. This accommodation of the largest spikes in traffic often associated with the most popular web sites. We are always adding network connectivity and new routes in an effort to make sure content is delivered as efficiently as possible.

Service-Level Agreement
DataHive pays our transit IP providers to make sure packets of information are delivered to the end users. This offers significant advantages over simply peering with the major backbone. Peering agreements rarely include Service Level Agreements (SLAs) so no one is accountable for lost packets at congested exchange points. Because DataHive maintains SLAs with all our Internet Service Providers we are able to guarantee that all packets will leave our network at full speed.

Network Trends and Relationships
DataHive works closely with leading telecommunications companies to build and maintain our world-class network. By monitoring the networks, carrier connections and developing trends, we take steps to keep in sync with demand. Recent trends include the widespread deployment of the emergence of Streaming Video, the development of VOIP, the need for clients to have disaster recovery implementation and the increasing need for security. Keeping up with global trends puts your customers ahead of the rest.

Monitoring
Our Network Operation Centre uses industry-standard SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and provides round-the-clock monitoring of all hardware, including routers, switches, UPS systems, and servers. The Network Operation Centre also maintains power, environmental factors, generator status, and network connectivity. All critical services/ports are monitored, including FTP, HTTP, SMTP, HTTPS, SSH and POP3.

Internet Service Providers
DataHive is a carrier neutral facility; this allows each client to choose the Internet Service Provider (ISP) they feel best suits their unique connectivity requirements. Clients who have existing relationships with specific carriers can now transport their services into DataHive’s secure data centre facilities and utilize all the services and features DataHive provides. Now, a complete network move into DataHive facilities is seamless, and an easy reality for network administrators everywhere.

For those clients who do not have a preference, our primary network / internet / carrier provider is Rogers Canada. Our BGP failover to Hurricane Electric and Zayo provides reliable Internet connectivity.
