Internet Exchange Point
Internet Exchange Point (IXP) at DataHive
What is an IXP?
An Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is a physical infrastructure through which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) exchange Internet traffic between their networks. The primary purpose is to allow networks to interconnect directly instead of through third-party networks. The advantages of direct interconnection are numerous, but the primary advantages are greater security, increased speed, reduced latency, and reduced cost.
What are the Benefits of an IXP?
Some of the many advantages to local routing of Internet traffic via a common exchange point are:
- Substantial cost-savings by eliminating the need to use external internet services
- More bandwidth becomes available for local users because of the lower costs of local capacity.
- Local links can be up to ten times faster due to the reduced latency and fewer hops to its destination
- New providers and services, that rely on high-speed low-cost connections become available, further benefiting from the broader user-base available via the IXP
- More choices of Internet Service Providers on which to send upstream traffic to the Internet
- Smoother and more competitive wholesale transit market
- Reduced reliance on multiple peering
