What is an IXP?

An Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is a physical infrastructure through which data is exchanged securely between client networks. The primary purpose of an IXP is to allow networks to interconnect directly instead of through third-party networks. The advantages of the direct interconnection to clients are numerous, but the primary advantages are security, reduced cost, reduced latency, and fibre bandwidth.

What are the Benefits of an IXP?

Some of the many advantages to local routing of Internet traffic via a common exchange point are:

• Substantial cost-savings by eliminating the need to put all traffic through more expensive long-distance links around the rest of the world.
• More bandwidth becomes available for local users because of the lower costs of local capacity.
• Local links can become up to ten times faster due to the reduced latency in traffic, and fewer hops to get to its destination.
